Matching unmatched PDFs
Why a file lands in the unmatched list, how to attach it, and what to check first.
Why a file is unmatched
A file goes to the unmatched list when no identifier ties it to exactly one paper in the project. Usually no DOI was found in the file or its name; sometimes a DOI was found but no paper in the project has it.
This is not a fault. The platform is declining to guess, because a wrong guess would attach values to the wrong paper.
Attaching it yourself
The list shows each file beside the papers that still need a PDF, ordered by score. Choose the paper and confirm, and the file becomes that paper’s PDF.
Before you confirm, compare the title, year and journal on the first page of the file with the paper. If the file shows a DOI that differs from the paper’s, stop.
Two common causes
A publisher cover sheet may show a DOI that belongs to the journal issue and not to the article. A supplementary file may carry the article’s DOI without being the article: attach it as supplementary material, not as the full text.
When no paper fits
Sometimes the file belongs to a paper that was never imported, or to a different study. Import the paper first, then attach the file. Do not attach a file to a paper that is only roughly right just to clear the list.
